Abbott Laboratories announced a recall of million containers of Similac infant formula in countries such as the Caribbean, Guam, Puerto Rico and the United States.
This is done because its best-selling Similac formula allegedly contaminated with insect parts.
The company said that Similac formula products may contain larvae or small insects that can cause abdominal pain and digestive problems. However, this Similac formula recall does not affect other Abbott products.
Melissa Brotz, a spokeswoman for the company said that Abbott found the insects in one part of a manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan last week. She said that they immediately closed the one area and started investigations. She added that they are in the process of resolving this problem.
Consumers can enter online the lot number on their containers. This is done to determine if they are subject to recall. Products should be returned to Abbott for a full refund.
Similac is the best selling of Abbott's infant formula products in the U.S. that include adult brands such Ensure. It had sales of $ 5,3 billion last year.
