Local cyclist will attempt to set world record at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Henderson resident Erik Skramstad will attempt to make history today at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Skramstad will cycle around the Bullring – LVMS’s 3/8-mile asphalt oval – in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Cycling, No Hands-Distance in One Hour.”
Skramstad, a teacher at Mack Middle School and adjunct professor at Sierra Nevada College, will attempt to break the current record of 15.9 miles ridden on a bicycle without using hands beginning at 5 a.m. on Tuesday. An active cyclist, he has participated in various events including the Furnace Creek 508, the 3,000-mile Race Across America and the Laughlin Loop 190-mile ride.
“There were a number of reasons I chose to pursue breaking this particular record,” Skramstad said. “Over the last couple of years, the time I have for riding has dwindled. My focus on ultra-marathon racing has shifted for the time being as I complete my doctoral degree, to a world-record attempt. I wanted to attempt to break a very achievable record that was interesting and, after watching numerous automotive events at LVMS, it seemed like a perfect fit for this attempt.”
