Hugh Hefner, who founded Playboy in 1953, divorced his second wife Kimberley Conrad this year. His first marriage with Mildred Williams also ended in divorce in 1959.
Hefner is known as a defender of sexual freedom and civil rights. He published articles that challenged McCarthyism and the Vietnam War, and advocates for gay rights and legalization of marijuana.
The first edition of Playboy featuring Marilyn Monroe's calendar photograph in December 1953 sold 51,000 copies. That was the beginning of delivering the magazine into an international enterprise worth millions of dollars.
